LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Breckinridge Co., Ky., sheriff Todd Pate pleaded guilty to misdemeanor, first offense DUI in court in Bowling Green, Ky., Wednesday, less than two days after his arrest. He's to pay an $800 fine and adhere to several conditions as his punishment.

Warren County Circuit Court Clerk Brandi Duvall confirmed Pate's plea in Warren District Court. Duvall said Pate's other Warren County charges of reckless driving, possession of an open alcohol container, a seat belt violation and a turn signal violation "were merged" into the DUI plea.

District judge Sam Potter sentenced Pate to a "probated" or suspended 30-day jail sentence and ordered Pate to pay an $800 fine and attend a drug and alcohol education class. Pate will not spend any time in jail as long as he has no law violations in the next year, Duvall said.

Kentucky State Police arrested Pate Monday night at a Waffle House parking lot in Bowling Green. They began searching for Pate after his wife took out a warrant Monday and told authorities Pate threatened to kill her, her parents and take his own life.

Pate was also charged with terroristic threatening Monday night; however, the charge was not part of the Warren County plea, Duvall said. That charge is pending in Breckinridge County.

Pate has served as Breckinridge County sheriff since 2003. A chief deputy took charge of the sheriff's department after Pate's arrest.

Pate told WDRB News Wednesday night that he was headed to a treatment facility, but did not want to comment further.
