Spalding University trains for active shooter situation

Posted: Updated:

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- An active shooter training exercise was underway at Spalding University Thursday morning at the Eagan Leadership Center at 4th and Breckenridge.

The training comes in response to the mass shooting at a community college in Oregon last week.

Police, EMT, fire crews, and other emergency workers took part in the training. They had a scenario that they were acting out to help them train.

The drill is as realistic as possible, with a SWAT team in full tactical gear as well as volunteers from the school who help act out the scenario.

:"I think it's good for us to be prepared in any kind of situation, so I think overall, this is a good experience for us," said Joey Lesher, a member of Spalding's soccer team. "I think we're lucky to have it at our university. It makes me feel a little safer."

There were no classes at Spalding today.

Neighboring Presentation Academy is in school and is on lockdown as part of the training.
