CBS SPORTS: Ohio State freshman confirms "gist of allegations" in UL sex scandal

Posted: Updated:

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) – An Ohio State freshman who briefly committed to the University of Louisville is backing up claims made in a recent tell-all book about escort services allegedly provided to recruits and players, according to CBS Sports.

CBS Sports is reporting that JaQuan Lyle spoke to NCAA investigators this week. He allegedly told investigators about a recruiting visit to Louisville that he made in June 2013, and confirmed "the gist of allegations" involving paid escorts during his trip to the school. CBS Sports cites an anonymous source close to the investigation as source of the information.

Last Friday, a book called “Breaking Cardinal Rules: Basketball and the Escort Queen,” was published. In that book, Katina Powell, a self-described madam, wrote that she took four escorts to do a “show” for Lyle.

Powell claims she was paid over $10,000 to throw 22 parties for players, recruits and their fathers between 2010 and 2014.

U of L men’s basketball coach Rick Pitino has denied any knowledge of the allegations made in the book.

Scott Cox, attorney for ex-U of L assistant coach Andre McGee, who has been accused of organizing the escort services for the recruits, reacted to the news Thursday afternoon.

"How can you comment on a leak from an anonymous source from what is supposed to be a confidential interview?" Cox said in a written statement. "Who is the source of this information? What doe[s] the 'gist' mean? This is going to be a long criminal and NCAA investigation. We're not going to comment on every rumor."

Chuck Smrt is president of The Compliance Group, a company based in Kansas that U of L has retained to investigate the allegations. In an e-mail response to a question from WDRB, Smrt wrote, "Unfortunately, I will not be able to help you with any questions, even if it only relates to process."
