All clear given at JCTC after earlier report of shots fired

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) - The all clear has been given at Jefferson Community and Technical College after reports of shots fired shut down the 8th and Chestnut location.

LMPD responded to a report of shots fired at JCTC at 8th and Chestnut Streets around 3:30 p.m.

The call was made from inside the building, but police did not find anything. No one was hurt.

Ishmon Burks, an instructor at JCTC, said there was a nursery with Pre-K students in it, who were escorted across the street to a different building when the alert was sent.

It was an intense scene. Fully-armed SWAT members ran into buildings to clear them, and students came out with their hands up. At one point, police cars went racing down Chestnut so fast they ripped through the police tape.

A police chopper hovered over the building at 8th and Chestnut for awhile while officials swept the building. Streets nearby were shut down during it all.

One counselor, Tony Leslie, says the campus is a gun-free zone. He says the school has recently gone through active shooter training and says everything was orderly and taken seriously.

"Evacuate ... out, out, out," he recalled police saying.

"And they meant business," he said. "They were taking no chances ... and anyone in the building, it was hands were up, you evacuate."

A JCTC message sent at 4:23 p.m. said the normal campus activities could resume.

It was about 45 minutes from the time the call was received to when that all clear was issued by police and JCTC officials
