Audits report $7.4 million at Southeast Bullitt Fire unaccounted for

Posted: Updated:

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- A court filing says external audits of the Southeast Bullitt Fire District show more than $7.4 million unaccounted for from the agency's accounting, likely due to a lack of internal control over reporting and correcting errors. It does not indicate any money is missing.

The audits cover seven years from 2008 to 2014, and auditors write they could not account for tax money transferred between the fire department and the fire district board each year. However, the filing describing the audits notes a large number of documents related to the accounting had been "seized by authorities" who are investigating the department and were unavailable for review.

The report also says people involved would not provide documents or speak with auditors. The audits are required by Kentucky statutes and are referenced as part of a lawsuit between the fire department and the fire district board.

Thomas Clay, the Louisville attorney representing the department, told WDRB News the supporting documents have been available from him or the department since late August, and no one has asked for them. They are public records, Clay added, returned by the Bullitt County sheriff's department.

"Nothing I see shows that money was misappropriated," Clay said. The court filing in Bullitt Co. Circuit Court Monday is "misleading the public about the process involved."

The original lawsuit was filed after WDRB revealed allegations of mismanagement centering on former chief Julius Hatfield.
