Wrong way driver dies after crashing into median near Cannons Lane

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- One person is dead after driving the wrong way on I-64 and crashing their SUV into a median.

Louisville Metro Police Detective Phil Russell tells WDRB that the accident happened about 3:15 a.m. in the eastbound lanes of I-64. When the driver of the SUV crashed into the median, the SUV exploded on impact and burst into flames.

The victim, now identified as 24-year-old Savannah E. Robb, died at the scene.

The SUV was still on fire when first responders reached it.

Traffic in both the eastbound and westbound lanes of I-64 between Cannons Lane and Grinstead Drive was at a standstill after the crash, and some drivers were stuck for hours.

Investigators worked to reconstruct the accident scene while traffic was stopped. The westbound lanes re-opened around 5 a.m. After the investigation wrapped up, the charred SUV was towed and the eastbound lanes were re-opened around 8 a.m.

Police haven't said why Robb was going the wrong way on the interstate.
