'Purple Purse Challenge' aims to put an end to domestic violence

Posted: Updated:

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- WDRB is supporting the Purple Purse Challenge sponsored by the Center for Women and Families to help put an end to domestic violence.

It's a public awareness and fundraising campaign that many domestic violence centers across the country are taking part in.

The winning organization will win $100,000 dollars.

The goal is to create long-term security for domestic violence survivors, including providing monetary support.

"Most people don't realize that economic abuse happens in 98 percent of all of survivors, and it's the main reason that they can't break free because they don't have the resources to leave," said Jane White with The Center for Women and Families.

"Purple Purse" was created because a purse represents the center of a woman's finances.

Purple is the national color for domestic violence awareness.
