Some say Jeffersonville man's murder could have been prevented

JEFFERSONVILLE, Ind. (WDRB) -- Jeffersonville man Earl Cave turned 60 years old one week before he was murdered.

The father of three lived in King Solomon Apartments with his son Darren Cave. But police say Darren turned on his dad last week, beating him to death and leaving his body on their bathroom floor. Investigators say a foot print left on Cave linked his son to the murder. He later confessed to police.

"I know he's watching down on me and my daughter but it's just horrible what happened,” said Yvonne Casey, Earl Cave’s ex-wife.

Casey and Earl Cave have a daughter together.

"My daughter has been traumatized. It was hard enough for me to tell her that her dad was murdered and then on top of that I had to tell her it was her half-brother that did it,” Casey told WDRB in an interview Wednesday.

Casey says Earl Cave was a good dad.

"He loved his kids, all of them. He was a good guy. He didn't deserve any of this,” said Casey.

Casey believes the murder could have been prevented had Darren Cave received the help he needed when he was younger.

"He was a troubled child his whole life but to do that was just horrible,” she said.

The 33-year-old has a criminal history dating back to 1998.

Some charges include armed robbery, battery of police, burglary, resisting law enforcement, public indecency and now murder. Casey says Earl Cave tried to get his son help.

"He told me he took him to LifeSpring and Darren went in and they gave him medication and he refused to take it. I hope justice is served. I hope Darren never ever gets out and never sees daylight again,” she said.

Cave remains in the Clark County Jail on no bond.
