SLIDESHOW: Two buildings, church heavily damaged in early morning Highlands fire

Posted: Updated:

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Three buildings were heavily damaged by a major fire in the Highlands.

The fire started in a red brick building in the 1600 block of Beechwood Avenue about 2:40 a.m. Thursday. Investigators believe the fire started in a garage before spreading to a nearby home and a church.

It took 70 firefighters more than an hour to get the flames out. What proved difficult was the fact that the buildings were so close together. Fire officials say there is only about ten feet between each building.

"Anytime you're dealing with this type of incident, as far as so many structures so close together, and even those structures being divided up and sectioned off, it poses an even greater challenge than any typical structure fire," said Louisville Fire & Rescue spokesman Capt. Sal Melendez. So we've had our hands full since the beginning,"

All three buildings were heavily damaged. One firefighter was taken to the hospital with a wrist injury, but people who live nearby say it could have been a lot worse.

"It's difficult but you just have to be thankful that nobody was actually hurt because things that are damaged are just things," said Jon-Mark Sandquist.

Louisville Fire & Rescue set up a command center in the parking lot of the nearby Mid City Mall. Bardstown Road and Baxter Avenue have now reopened. One block of Beechwood Avenue was expected to remain closed while fire crews are on scene.

An arson investigator is looking into the cause of the fire, which is standard procedure.
