Walnut Street Baptist Church celebrates 200 years of service

Posted: Updated:

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Walnut Street Baptist Church is celebrating 200 years of service in Louisville.

The church was founded in 1815 with only thirteen members and was called First Baptist Church at the time.

As the congregation increased, it united with it's daughter church in 1849 to form Walnut Street Baptist.

Members say it's simple why their church has stood the test of time.

"The heart of it is ... the word of God and the love of the people here," Dale Thiry said. "They are wonderful, wonderful people."

An anniversary sermon was part of the service along with choir and orchestra hymns.
