Jeffersontown Police shoot and kill robbery suspect

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Jeffersontown Police say they shot and killed a man who was in the process of committing a robbery Tuesday afternoon.

During a press conference, Jeffersontown Police Chief Rick Sanders said the robbery took place at approximately 1 p.m. Tuesday in a Jimmy Johns' parking lot in the Jeffersontown area on Hurstbourne Parkway.

"When officers arrived," Sanders said. "They went in the direction we were told he ran and we were able to make contact with him behind the Holiday Inn."

Sanders says the suspect -- a 30-year-old man from Indiana -- pulled a gun from his waistband. That's when, he says, the officers shot the suspect.

"This is an unfortunate situation," Sanders said. "No officer comes to work wanting to shoot somebody but they did what they had to do."

The man died as a result of his injuries.

Sanders said officers found a syringe loaded with heroin on the suspect's person.

"A syringe fell out of his pocket that was loaded up with what I suspect may be heroin and we've talked about the heroin problem before," Sanders said. "But it makes desperate people do desperate things."

The chief says he is not going to release the names of the officers involved at this time but says they are both veteran officers. They are both on administrative leave while the shooting is being investigated.

Jeffersontown Police will conduct the investigation but Sanders says there is no conflict of interest.

"This department is perfectly capable of handling this investigation," Sanders said. "We have nothing to hide. Everything that we discover will be turned over."
