Gov. Beshear appoints former Louisville deputy mayor to U of L Board of Trustees

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Gov. Steve Beshear appointed William E. Summers IV, a former longtime deputy Louisville mayor, to the University of Louisville Board of Trustees Wednesday.

Summers replaces Steve Wilson, who resigned to allow the appointment of a black trustee to the board after three appointments in July left the board without an African-American member for the first time in decades.

According to a ruling form Attorney General Jack Conway, at least two of the U of L board's 17 appointees must be minorities.

“Bill brings a wealth of experience and knowledge to the board with his four decades of leadership in government and business,” Beshear said in a news release. “I’m proud to make this appointment to diversify the university’s governing board. I want to take this opportunity to thank Steve Wilson for his time on the board and all his hard work and leadership.”

Summers most recently served as deputy mayor and chief administrative officer for Louisville Metro Government from 2003-2012. He graduated from Louisville Central High School before attending Central State University, the University of Maryland and Kentucky State University.

“For over 40 years I have devoted my life to serving my hometown of Louisville, and I appreciate this opportunity by Gov. Beshear to serve on U of L’s Board,” Summers said. This is a true honor and privilege to serve as a board member with the distinguished faculty, staff and students who have devoted their lives to helping U of L and the city of Louisville achieve greatness.”

Summers also served in the U.S. Army and the Kentucky national Guard.
