LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Louisville's greatest champion, Muhammad Ali, is standing behind Louisville's champion basketball program.

The team has been embroiled in controversy over sex scandal allegations involving players and recruits in the team's dorm building.

Muhammad Ali Tweeted a message of support for the University of Louisville Thursday night in the midst of the escort scandal.

Ali spokesperson Bob Gunnell says the Tweet comes from Ali's personal Twitter account, @RealALI_me.

Muhammad Ali's Twitter account sent out the tweet Thursday, calling on Louisville to unite behind the hashtag #UniteLouisville.

Gunnell tells WDRB News that Ali wanted to show support after another week of new developments stemming from self-admitted madam Katina Powell's allegations that women were paid to have sex with U of L basketball players and recruits on campus.

"With all of the information this week, Muhammad decided it was time to unite all the fans and get behind an effort for all the student athletes at the University of Louisville," Gunnell said.

Ali also wanted to show support for coach Rick Pitinio and athletics director Tom Jurich, Gunnell said.

Ali will send more messages about U of L from his personal Twitter account and from his fan account @MuhammadAli.

The personal account showed 31 Tweets and 3,185 followers Thursday evening. The fan account showed 1,146 Tweets and more than 666,000 followers.
