LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Three-time defending region champion Fern Creek advanced to another 6th Region final with a 4-1 victory over Holy Cross Thursday night at Mercy Academy. Frustrated for the first twenty minutes of the opening half with plenty of pressure and just a couple of crossbars to show for it, the Tigers finally found the range and went to halftime with a 3-1 advantage before adding one more goal in the second half.
The Tigers will meet Fairdale in Saturday's final. The Bulldogs moved to 19-3 with a 3-0 win in the opener over Bullitt Central. They did not meet Fern Creek during the regular season. It's a 6:00 pm start at Mercy Saturday.
Old friends Trinity and St. Xavier will meet for the 7th Region Crown Saturday. Trinity got a goal from Brooks Hoddinot with six minutes left in regulation to tie the game with Manual at 1. Andrew Goetz then got the game-winner in the second overtime to push the Rocks to 19-1-2 on the year with a 2-1 victory.
Lucas Mudd scored the game's only goal in the first half as St. Xavier downed KCD 1-0. It was just the second loss of the season for the Bearcats against 18 wins. The Tigers (19-6) and Shamrocks meet at 6:00 pm Saturday at St. Xavier. Trinity beat St. X 2-1 on September 30th in their only regular season meeting.
