Crews investigating after fatal house fire in rural Floyd County

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- A Floyd County man died Friday in the basement of a home, walled in by flames.

"There were flames shooting from the roof and the entire structure itself was on fire," Lanesville Fire Chief Tony Combs said.

He says, at that point, there's not much you can do for the person inside.

"We couldn't get in. We had to fight from the exterior because the flames were so hot and there was too much flames to make entry," Combs explained.

In the daylight firefighters found the victim's body in the basement. We're told he was the only person in the home.

"I got up and I could see the lights and everything," neighbor Peggy Butrum said.

Butrum woke up to the morning commotion. Another one of her neighbors called 911 around 6 a.m., spotting the flames on West McCarthy Knob Road while walking his dog.

The fire chief says he doesn't suspect foul play but he's still trying to figure out exactly what went wrong.

"We dig through what's left of the smoldering remains and try to put out any hot spots and we're investigating to see the cause of the fire and if there is anything else we need to find," Combs said.

We're told it's Lanesville's first fatal fire of the year and they don't happen often.

"It's sad to lose a neighbor," Butrum said.

When you get to a home and it's engulfed in flames, the picture stays burned in your memory for quite some time.

"It's always difficult anytime you have someone who has been killed or injured," Combs said.
