LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Churchill Downs is preparing to submit a bid to host the 2018 Breeders' Cup.

Spokesman Darren Rogers confirmed the news to WDRB on Saturday.

"We've had a great relationship with the Breeders' Cup over the years," he said. "We would love to have the event back in Louisville again down the road."

The Breeders' Cup, which will be held next Saturday, Oct. 31, at Keeneland in Lexington, attracts some of the best race horses in the world with a $5 million purse.

The race has been held at Churchill Downs eight times, the last of which was in 2011.

"We've had really good preliminary discussions," Rogers said. "Following this year's race at Keeneland, they'll delve more down into the formality of the bids."

The race will be held at Santa Anita Park in 2016 and at Del Mar Racetrack in 2017.

The 2018 race is the next available date.

Rogers could not confirm a timetable as to when the 2018 location might be announced.
