LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- A Louisville man is facing serious charges for allegedly driving under the influence before causing a traffic crash that sent several people to the hospital.

According to the arrest report, 35-year-old Derrick Johnson was in a Chevrolet HHR traveling west on Breckinridge just before 4 a.m. Sunday when "he disregarded the red light at S. 7th Street and struck a green Chevrolet Blazer that was northbound on S. 7th Street."

Police say the Blazer flipped over on its side, and three passengers in the Blazer were taken to University Hospital with serious injuries. Police say two victims sustained life-threatening injuries.

According to the arrest report, Johnson's passenger was also taken to University Hospital with two injuries.

Police say they found two open alcohol containers in Johnson's vehicle, and that Johnson's speech was slurred and he smelled strongly of alcohol. Police say Johnson "admitted to having a few drinks and was coming from a bar on Baxter Avenue."

A search warrant was executed to allow officers to take a sample of Johnson's blood.

Johnson now faces several charges, including operating a motor vehicle under the influence of drugs or alcohol, failure to maintain insurance, and first degree assault. He is being held at Louisville Metro Corrections on a $25,000 cash bond.
