Louisville City's Bryan Burke named league's top defender

Posted: Updated:
LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -

Louisville City’s Bryan Burke, who led the USL in assists this season, has been named the league’s defender of the year.

Burke, who came to Louisville on a one-year contract, helped Louisville City earn second place in the league and the conference championship in the team’s inaugural season. Burke played in all 28 regular season games for Louisville, tied with midfielder Juan Guzman for the most minutes played by an outfield player in the league.

The USL player awards are voted on by team management, media and an online fan poll.

Burke played for the USL’s Orlando City SC before breaking his leg in 2013. When Orlando City made the jump to MLS, Burke was left off the roster and signed with Louisville City the following spring.

Burke will reportedly not return to Louisville next season.

The 2015 USL Awards are being announced throughout this week, and continue with the unveiling of the 2015 USL Coach of the Year on Wednesday.
