Fantasy Football: The ideal fantasy lineup for Week 8 of the NFL season

Posted: Updated:

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Week 8 of the NFL season is highlighted by a few marquee matchups, and its a rare weekend during the bye week stretch of the season with few hindrances to your fantasy roster.

The four teams on bye (Washington, Philadelphia, Buffalo, Jacksonville) are a combined 11-17 this season, and none of them have what anyone would call fantasy studs this season.

That will make for a much-anticipated slate of games, the most exciting of which will surely be undefeated Green Bay at undefeated Denver on Sunday night.

But there are ample statistical implications elsewhere as well. Here's my ideal fantasy football lineup for Week 8:

Philip Rivers, QB, San Diego Chargers

Rivers 2,452 passing yards this season are more than 400 more than the next closest quarterback, and most of that is due to his 44 attempts per game. He has plenty of great weapons around him, and Sunday he gets an opponent that must make him salivate. Baltimore is very last in the NFL in defending quarterbacks, surrendering more than 25 fantasy points in four of seven games this season. Rivers is poised for a big day.

Marshawn Lynch, RB, Seattle Seahawks

Lynch has struggled out of the gate in 2015 after a hamstring injury caused him to miss several early games. He was finally back to full strength in Week 7, and he showed flashes of old brilliance rushing for 122 yards and a touchdown. Seattle travels to Dallas on Sunday, and the Cowboys have given up at least 18 fantasy points to running backs in every game but one this year. And with much the Dallas offense has struggled, Lynch could get a whole lot of carries.

Calvin Johnson, WR, Detroit Lions

Johnson also struggled a bit early this year, but that was largely attributed to erratic play by his quarterback, Matthew Stafford. He has turned it around somewhat though, catching 11 balls and scoring two touchdowns in the last two weeks. The Lions recently fired their offensive coordinator, and with the quarterbacks coach taking over those duties, one would have to think the passing game could get a nice boost. A matchup against Kansas City on Sunday in London will also be beneficial, given that the Chiefs are last in the league in defending wide receivers. Johnson may come out with more points than anyone in the league in Week 8.

Tyler Eifert, TE, Cincinnati Bengals

Eifert has been one of the biggest fantasy surprises this season for those outside Cincinnati, and he gets a very enticing matchup Sunday. The Bengals travel to Pittsburgh, and while the two teams tend to have lower-scoring, more defensive-minded games with each other, the Steelers struggle mightily in defending tight ends. This season, they've faced two Pro Bowl-caliber tight ends, Rob Gronkowski and Antonio Gates. In those games, those two totaled 20 catches and six touchdowns. Eifert isn't necessarily in their category yet, but he has that kind of ability and the size/speed combination to create the same mismatches. I love Eifert against that defense, and this particular matchup may dictate the outcome of Sunday's game.

This Week on WDRB
