'I Am Scott County' campaign aims to shed positive light on community

Posted: Updated:

SCOTTSBURG, Ind. (WDRB) -- With Scott County, Indiana in the headlines for drug use, dirty needles and an HIV outbreak, the "I Am Scott County" campaign is aiming to change the community's image.

Scottsburg business owner Richie Buchanan is one of the people involved in the group, which has nearly 800 likes on Facebook. He says it was formed in the Spring after a wave of media coverage about the public health emergency centered in Austin.

"Seeing that was definitely hurtful to us because we know there's so much more," Buchanan said.

The group focused on finding ways to put Scott County in a more positive light.

"It was such a small population that was being focused on," Buchanan told WDRB News.

They're using t-shirts, advertising and a new contest to try and change the community's image and get the word out.  They want middle and high school students to make a 30-second video explaining why Scott County is special to them.

The deadline for submission is November 13. Winners will get cash prizes and the top video will be featured as a commercial.

"We're no different than other people in other communities and we have the same wonderful life and we have the same opportunities, so we wanted to show that side," Buchanan said.

WDRB asked some Scott County residents why they love living there.

"The small town, the people," said Summer Graham. "I am Scott County. I love it here."

"Fun things you know, that I can get out and do. I'm retired now," Jerry Crane said.

"Just the small town atmosphere," Phyllis Hale explained.

The video contest winners will be announced at the Austin High School vs. Scottsburg High School girls basketball game on Nov. 24. For more information about how to enter and prizes, click here
