CRAWFORD | Lewis, Lee bat leadoff, face the inevitable questions at ACC media day

Posted: Updated:

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (WDRB) — It didn’t take long for the subject to come up. The third question for Louisville guard Trey Lewis, making his first and only visit to the ACC men’s basketball media day, went like this, from a North Carolina-based reporter.

“There was a perception that your school and coach kind of hung you guys out to dry by sending you here without coach Pitino. As players, did you see it that way?”

Lewis was ready.

“We understand why coach isn’t here,” Lewis said. “He’s been advised by legal counsel not to talk about these matters. We understand that. They sent us because we’re leaders on this team, and we’re here for that reason.”

Pitino's absence is a topic. The coach was advised by Louisville's attorneys not to attend, nor to speak further about the NCAA investigation into allegations from a recent book about escorts being hired for recruiting visits by a former basketball office staffer. Pitino's statements Tuesday about that staffer, Andre McGee, needing to come forward and tell the truth, apparently were the last straw, according to one source. Pitino has made many general comments about the scandal and his response to it over the past several weeks, including live interviews the night it broke, the night after it broke and with WHAS radio. This week, the school's counsel decided he'd said enough. Knowing it would be an unavoidable subject in Charlotte, he was told to stay on the bench.

As for their one and only experience at the ACC’s preseason basketball event, Lewis and fellow graduate transfer Damion Lee said they were eager to have the experience.

“I felt like Damion and me were groomed for this moment,” Lewis said. “We have the ability to come in, be good teammates, have great leadership.”

Lee’s second question dealt with the mood around the program, and what it’s been like being in the midst of everything.

“All we do is just focus on basketball,” Lee said. “. . . We don’t let any outside distractions influence us. . . . The only thing coach has spoken to us about is staying focused on our goals, continuing to get better as people off the court and a team on the court. Our goal is to come together as a very young team.”

Both players will have an extended interview session with writers soon, we’ll have more from both, plus coverage of the coaches’ session this afternoon, and comments from ACC commissioner John Swofford, as the day goes on, and on WDRB News at 4, 6 and 10.
