JCPS: Louisville Male High to have extra security Friday due to threat

Posted: Updated:

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Louisville Male High School will be on heightened alert on Friday, following a threat found written on a student's desk Wednesday.

Bonnie Hackbarth, a spokeswoman for Jefferson County Public Schools, told WDRB News that officials found the threat "late in the school day" Wednesday about an incident that might happen on Friday, Oct. 30.

"We don’t believe it’s credible but we must take it seriously because safety is our top priority," Hackbarth said. "Parents and students need to know how serious this is...we can’t ignore these threats, but at the same time, this takes away attention from learning."

Male High School principal Jim Jury will send a note home with students about the threat on Thursday, Hackbarth said.

Hackbarth said JCPS will have its K9 unit "sweep the building early Friday morning and make security and administrators very visible on campus throughout the day."

"When we find someone responsible for any threat or apparent threat, we will take serious action, including the full discipline allowed in our student code of conduct and referring them for possible prosecution under state and federal laws," Hackbarth said.

The last person who threatened a school was arrested and charged with terroristic threatening.

The full text of the letter:

Parents,

I was going to send this in the morning, but decided to send it this evening.

I want to bring an issue to your attention, and to be sure that you have accurate information and dispel any rumors you may have heard.

We discovered a disturbing note written on a student desk that could be taken as a threat to the school for Oct. 30. It is generic and not specific and while we do not believe the note represents a credible threat, your child’s safety is our first priority. Therefore, we must take this situation seriously. We have contacted JCPS Security, and they are assisting. Meanwhile, a JCPS K9 unit will sweep the building Friday morning, and security and staff will make themselves very visible throughout the day.

I assure you that if we find the source of this note, the responsible party will face strict disciplinary measures as outlined in the JCPS Code of Conduct and perhaps under federal law. We also encourage you to remind your children about the potential consequences for the person who is responsible for this note.

Please know that I firmly believe the best way to shed light on issues like this is to confront them head on and not let them fester.  Such is the case with this.

Also, please be assured that the safety and well-being of your child is always foremost in everything we do. Our goal is to keep our safe and nurturing school environment a place where all students learn at high levels.  That has been our goal for years and will continue to be the goal.

If you have any further questions about this, or additional information please do not hesitate to call or contact us.

Thank you for your support and assistance in keeping our school safe for everyone.

Sincerely,

Dr. Jim Jury
