Throughout the current scandal surrounding the University of Louisville basketball program, much of the speculation has revolved around the future of head coach Rick Pitino. Today I want to talk about Athletic Director Tom Jurich.
Since coming to Louisville in 1997, Jurich has been a guy willing to take calculated risks. Almost all of them have paid off for U of L. You may not want to take risks in your work, but you want Jurich to because he creates excitement. Perhaps the best example of this was his controversial decision to rehire head football coach Bobby Petrino. And so far, that looks like another smart move.
From Day One, Jurich has been all about honesty, NCAA compliance and working within the rules. His cultivation of women’s sports at U of L has made the program a shining example of Title IX compliance. He’s committed to winning, but never at the expense of integrity.
And that’s why it’s such a shame that he finds himself in this current situation.
I don’t know how this will all eventually turn out. But I believe Tom Jurich is an honorable man who was blindsided by these allegations as much as anyone.
When you’re in charge of a machine with so many moving parts, total perfection is virtually impossible to achieve. Tom Jurich has come pretty darned close. I’m just sorry he has been put in this position.
I’m Bill Lamb and that’s my Point of View.
