U.S. Dept. of Transportation awards $10 M grant to Port of Indiana

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Two new bridges aren't the only transportation improvements about to hit southern Indiana.

The Port of Indiana-Jeffersonville is getting a federal grant to improve it's shipping capability.

"The bottom line, this project is going to provide a major boom on these inland water ways and to this region. And that's why I'm proud to announce today the Department of Transportation has awarded a $10 million grant," Paul Jaenichen, with the U.S. Department of Transportation, said.

Another four miles of railroad will be added to the existing 11 mile network, including an extension to the River Ridge Commerce Center.

Other improvements will allow cargo to be transferred from trucks, to rail cars to barges more efficiently.

State leaders were on hand for the announcement Friday and say the Port allows southern Indiana businesses to be competitors in a global economy.
