Panelists come to Louisville to discuss warning signs of human trafficking

Posted: Updated:

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Panelists talked about the warning signs of human trafficking Saturday at a conference in Louisville.

It was part of a program of the United Nations Foundation.

Speakers say human trafficking affects more than 27 million people worldwide, and a lot of them are children.

One pediatrician is teaching med students at U of L how to spot the warning signs.

She says she never learned about human trafficking in college and wonders if some of her past patients could've been victims.

"I realized then that if I'm missing it, then my colleagues are missing it as well," said Dr. Olivia Mittell, an assistant professor at the U of L School of Medicine.

"And so I thought it was very important to commit myself to using my influence in the medical school to teach medical students how to recognize it, how to look for it ."

Saturday's conference was held to celebrate the 70th year since the local United Nations charter was formed.
