NEW ALBANY, Ind. (WDRB) -- Little Leaguers can't wait for new ball fields in Floyd County.

Their ceremonial catches -- and running of the bases -- serve as the groundbreaking for the new Kevin Hammersmith Memorial Park.

When it's finished, you'll find seven ball fields, a walking track and several acres of a nature preserve.

The project is dedicated to Kevin Hammersmith, the long-time county parks board member and Duke Energy manager. He died in a car crash four years ago, at age 52.

"Kevin had some great lessons -- we both did -- that were taught by our parents," Hammersmith's sister Tammy Persinger said. "You work hard, you study hard, you play hard and you enjoy your life to the fullest. for as long as you have and that lesson has hit home for many of us that knew him.

The Duke Energy Foundation, the state of Indiana and a Rotary club gave more than $100,000 for the park adjacent to Northside Christian Church.
