Fantasy Football: The top 3 free agent finds after a weekend of injuries

Posted: Updated:

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Week 8 of the NFL season may have been the worst injury weekend in the league's history.

Le'Veon Bell, Keenan Allen, Reggie Bush, Khiry Robinson and Steve Smith Sr. all suffered season-ending injuries.

Bell is seventh in rushing yards despite missing the first two games to suspension. Allen is second in receptions and third in receiving yards.

Season-ending injuries are so unfortunate for a player's future and the team's short-term success. They also, on am obviously less-important scale, drastically affect fantasy rosters.

And it doesn't help that Week 9 of the season has the most teams on bye of any all season, with six.

Still, there are a few really attractive waiver wire options with all those guys going down. Here's the three best:

DeAngelo Williams, RB, Pittsburgh Steelers

When Bell was out the first two weeks of the season on suspension, Williams shined. He rushed for 204 yards and three touchdowns in two games en route to 42 fantasy points. He then ran for 71 yards on nine carries after Bell went down Sunday. Williams again takes the starting role in Pittsburgh's backfield, making him the most-coveted free agent on the fantasy market right now. He's currently owned in just 28 percent of ESPN leagues. Everybody should be after him.

Steve Johnson, WR, San Diego Chargers

Johnson is also owned in just 28 percent of ESPN leagues, but he stands to benefit the most from Allen's absence. The former Kentucky star has previously shined in a No. 1 wide receiver role in Buffalo, and he has the ability to be a go-to target for Philip Rivers. Malcom Floyd could also benefit rom Allen's injury, but to a slightly lesser degree. Look for Johnson to get double-digit targets a game from here on out. He's a great waiver wire target this week.

Jeremy Langford, RB, Chicago Bears

Reports say starter Matt Forte has a sprained MCL, which isn't season-ending, but he is likely to miss some time. Langford has yet to start a game this year, but he has done well when Forte steps off the field for a rest. The rookie from Michigan State has a lot of talent, and in an expanded role with the Bears could provide a lot of help to fantasy owners. If you own Forte, or even if you don't, Langford has a lot of value for as long as he's on the field.
