LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) -- Democratic candidate Andy Beshear took the race for Attorney General Tuesday night, defeating Republican Whitney Westerfield.

Beshear, the son of Gov. Steve Beshear, narrowly claimed the job as Kentucky's chief law enforcement officer. He succeeds two-term Attorney General Jack Conway, who fell to Matt Bevin in the race for Kentucky governor.

"In this race, we faced historic out of state opposition, but I never lost faith that Kentucky families would choose an Attorney General committed to fighting for them," Beshear said in a statement Tuesday night. "Two years ago, I entered this race because I am committed to addressing the serious challenges facing Kentucky families...I will fight everyday to stand up not just for my kids, but for all of Kentucky's children and families."

The AG's campaign turned into a verbal sparring match, with Beshear insisting he's standing on his own record as a candidate, but Westerfield said his opponent capitalized on his last name to rake in big piles of cash.

The candidates attacked each other's credentials for the jobs. Westerfield criticized Beshear's lack of prosecutorial experience. Democrats pointed to a job evaluation early in Westerfield's tenure as an assistant prosecutor that said he sometimes put personal interests over work.
