LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- A Richmond, Ky. police officer is clinging to life after being shot during a robbery investigation and two men have been charged in the shooting.

According to Trooper Robert Purdy, a spokesman for the Kentucky State Police - Richmond Post, it happened around 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at an apartment on Ballard Drive, near the intersection of N. Third Street and Edwards Avenue.

Purdy says police were at the apartment investigating reports of an attempted robbery that occurred just before 7 a.m. near a gas station in Richmond.

According to Purdy, a suspect shot Officer Daniel Ellis while inside the apartment.

The suspect, who was also shot by an officer, is 34-year-old Raleigh Sizemore. He's charged with attempted murder of a police officer and he allegedly wouldn't let people leave the apartment this morning, so he's also charged with unlawful imprisonment.

Police say Gregory Ratliff, 25, has also been charged with complicity to commit murder of a police officer. He was inside the apartment.

Officers have also arrested Rita Creech and charged her with complicity to commit robbery.

The police officer was taken to University of Kentucky Hospital with life-threatening injuries.
