LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Indiana State Police say they are investigating a robbery that turned deadly Saturday afternoon.

According to a news release, it happened at 3:30 p.m. at John's Coin and Jewelry Shop at 61 W. Main Street in Austin, Indiana. Police say someone entered the shop and shot and killed the owner, 79-year-old John M. Turner.

Turner was later found by a family member, who called 911. According to the news release, the Austin City Police Department and Scott County EMS responded, initially under the assumption that it was a medical emergency. After a doctor and the Scott County Coroner's Office examined Turner's body at the hospital, they discovered a head wound that was "more consistent with foul play." The case soon became a death investigation, and the Austin City Police Department requested the help of the Indiana State Police.

On Monday morning, the Kentucky Medical Examiner's office in Louisville performed an autopsy. The preliminary cause of death has been determined to be a gunshot wound to the head. The official cause of death will not be determined until all of the autopsy results are complete, which usually takes up to six weeks, according to the news release.

"With this additional information, the case is now being investigated as a Robbery / Murder investigation," the news release states. "Anyone with information on this crime is encouraged to contact the Indiana State Police at 1-800-872-6743. All callers can remain anonymous.

The Scott County Sheriff's Department, the Scott County Prosecutor's Office and the Scottsburg City Police Department are also assisting in the investigation, police say.
