AUSTIN, Ind. (WDRB) -- A small-town community is on edge this afternoon after a well known businessman has been gunned down inside his store --and even more frightening, his killer is still on the run.

The community is experiencing shock and grief after learning someone walked into John's Coin and Jewelry Shop on Main Street Saturday, pulled out a gun and killed the beloved husband, father and grandfather.

"It's going to be a great loss to Austin, it really is," said customer Jenny Stamper.

Stamper still can't believe she won't see John Turner's smiling face behind the counter the next time she walks into John's Coin and Jewelry Shop.

"He'd pay you $30 or $40 if it was only worth $10 -- he was just that kind of guy," Stamper said.

Turner was working Saturday when Indiana State Police say someone walked into the store, robbed the 79-year-old, then killed him. A relative discovered his body that afternoon when he didn't come home.

"First initial thought: it was a medical situation. He was transported to Scott County Hospital," said Indiana State Police spokesman Jerry Goodin.

But doctors quickly realized Turner had not fallen and hit his head, but had been shot.

"It was a very cowardly, very despicable crime they committed on a defenseless 79-year-old man who was unarmed," Goodin said.

Now authorities are scrambling to catch the person who stole so much more than just a few items from this store. They robbed this community of a beloved member.

"We will do this nonstop until we find somebody," Goodin said.

"He would have given it to them," Stamper said. "All they had to do was say, 'My children are hungry.'"
