LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) – A man from French Lick, Ind. was arrested for selling people fake leases to hunt on land that didn’t belong to him, according to a release from the Indiana Department of Natural Resources.

DNR Officers arrested Samuel Hughes, 36, after hunters found trespassing on French Lick Resort Property said they had bought one-year exclusive hunting leases for the land from him.

Police say an investigation revealed Hughes, who owns Nature’s Ridge Whitetails Outfitters, never had permission to lease the properties and had drafted the written contracts with unsuspecting out-of-state hunters for thousands of dollars.

Indiana Conservation Officers say Hughes confessed to his involvement in the operation and was arrested Monday. Hughes has been charged with theft.

Anyone that believes they may have been a victim of this operation or with additional information pertinent to this investigation is encouraged to contact Indiana Conservation Officers’ Central Dispatch at 812-837-9536.
