LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- About 10 percent of students at the Academy @ Shawnee dropped out last year and JCPS is hoping a new program will turn things around.

Selected students will receive mentoring, tutoring and opportunities with local employers -- including GE.

Mentors will continue to work with students for a year after graduation, helping them transition to college, entry level careers, or the military.

The program will be run by the non profit Jobs for Kentucky Graduates.

"What other people take for granted, some of our students need to be intentionally taught and once you have the skill and capacity then you can be on the pathway to success," JCPS superintendent Donna Hargens said.

The Superintendent says Shawnee's drop out rate has already improved this year by about three percent.
