POLICE: Red Roof Inn murder victim was strangled
LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- The 911 call came in around 3 a.m. Friday.
When officers arrived at the Red Roof Inn, they found 28-year-old Thomas Grismer dead in his hotel room, with the suspect still at the scene.
"I believe they were friends and something went really bad and terrible to the point that this individual lost his life,” said Dwight Mitchell, LMPD spokesperson.
Mitchell says Grismer was strangled.
Police say the suspect was immediately taken into custody.
They aren't sure what events led up to the murder.
"It's in the early stages of the investigation. We don't know all those details, but it got to the level that someone was strangled,” said Mitchell.
Police believe Grismer and the suspect were staying at the hotel with a group of friends.
“I think there were other people in the room, but I’m not sure who was staying where, but there was more than one person in the room,” Mitchell told reporters.
Grismer was from Louisville.
We spoke to his childhood best friend Sean Graham over the phone.
"He was a character, very outgoing, outspoken, fun loving, very big heart,” said Graham.
Graham says Grismer had been in some legal trouble in the last few years.
A criminal record shows Grismer had been arrested for assault.
He'd also tried to escape from home incarceration.
But Graham says his friend recently wrote him saying he wanted to make better life choices.
"He was talking like he was trying to get his life back together,” Graham told WDRB.
Graham was surprised and sad to hear the news Friday.
He had talked to Grismer just a couple of weeks ago and never thought it would be the last time.
"He was a good person deep down to his core. He had a huge heart. I'm going to miss him. I wish there was more I could have done,” said Graham.
The suspect is in custody, but his name has not been released, because he has not yet been booked into jail.
This is Louisville's 70th murder this year.
