LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- If Derby and Triple Crown winner American Pharoah were Mr. Ed, he might ask you to vote for him in the race to be Sports Illustrated's 'Sportsman of the Year.'

Since he can't talk, we'll simply point you to the list of candidates so you can decide for yourself.

The 3-year-old colt has been named by Sports Illustrated as one of the 12 candidates for the coveted title bestowed by the magazine every year.

"The 3-year-old colt ended a 37-year Triple Crown drought with a huge win in the Belmont Stakes -- the 12th Triple Crown winner in history," the magazine states. "He completed his career with a 6.5 length win in the $5 million Breeders' Cup Classic in his final start before heading off to the breeding shed."

Others contenders include: 18-year-old gymnast Simone Biles, tennis great Serena Williams, and football player Thomas Davis.

Readers have until noon on Dec. 12 to vote. A reader poll will be revealed on Dec. 13 -- but the official decision will be made by the staff of the magazine on Dec. 14.
