Volunteers join Mayor Fischer to plant trees in SoBro neighborhood

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Volunteers from around Louisville spent Saturday sprucing up the SoBro Neighborhood.

The beautification efforts took place near the corner of 2nd and Kentucky Streets.

Mayor Greg Fischer was in attendance for the ribbon cutting of the new bus stop.

Volunteers planted about 20 trees along the sidewalk, which do more than just enhance the neighborhood.

"(They) help give a little revitalization to the area, squander some urban heat island effects that we have, increase air quality and stem some storm water run-off," Louisville Urban Forester Erin Thompson said.

An old woodworking building will also serve as the canvas for a new mural.

The project is a continuation of the artistic crosswalks in the neighborhood installed back in May of last year.
