LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Thirty-five teams put their math and science skills to the test Saturday during a "Trash Tech Challenge".

It was the 9th annual Kentucky State FIRST LEGO League regional qualifiers.

The competition at Bullitt East High School included 35 middle school teams from surrounding counties.

Students had to build and program LEGO robots and put them on a 4-by-8 foot table.

Their creations then had to do as many tasks as possible in just two-and-a-half minutes.

"(I) definitely want to be an engineer when I grow up,"7th grader Jake Linemin said. "I love to program, and I love to use my hands and build stuff."

Eleven teams will advance to the state competition, and whoever wins there will move on to the world championships.
