Walmart accepting applications for nearly 100 new jobs coming to Radcliff
RADCLIFF, Ky. (WDRB) -- The downsizing of Fort Knox significantly impacted Radcliff's economy, but the mayor says a new anchor store is symbolic of a new comeback.
The construction sounds near Joe Prather Highway and 31 W translate to new jobs and economic opportunity in the city.
Walmart is taking applications for its new neighborhood market store.
"You'll be able to order your groceries online and then drive up and they'll be delivered to your car," said Radcliff Mayor Mike Weaver. "It's not just that we have a grocery store there. But we have a development there. And it's what else is going to come around that anchor."
Mayor Weaver has big plans for Gateway Crossing, a $62 million development that includes Walmart. The city invested more than $1 million in construction, roads and lighted intersections to bring the site to life.
A few years ago, city officials were contacting businesses owners to open on the site. Now, the mayor says those same owners are finally calling back. But the anchor store can make or break this master plan.
Mayor Weaver says businesses are waiting to gauge the store's success before making any deals.
"Then I think that those restaurants that are interested will show more interest. And then I think we'll be looking at a totally different picture than we're looking at now," said Mayor Weaver.
Colton's Steakhouse & Grill sits right next to Gateway Crossing.
The manager anticipates hungry shoppers will come flying through the door once Walmart is open for business.
"We'll probably have a couple more servers, a couple more cooks to get us through the busy season," said Colton's manager Chad Harbolt.
On top of the hill lies Boundary Oak Distillery, a tourist attraction that could bring more traffic to the development site.
It's a project the mayor takes great pride in, but he's not taking the credit.
"I'm not the one that brought this here. The last mayor did with the city council members," said Mayor Weaver. "You just have to accept it as it comes and realize that all of these things take time."
Construction workers tell me the new Walmart should be open by mid-January.
