UPDATE: All-clear notice given after 'suspicious package' prompts evacuation of federal building

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Employees of the Ron Mazzoli Federal Building were briefly evacuated after authorities say a suspicious package was detected in the loading dock area, according to a federal spokesman.

But shortly after 12 p.m., the all-clear was given.

Rob Sperling, director of communications for Federal Protective Services in Washington DC, says the Explosive Ordinals Disposal unit was on-hand to evaluate the contents of the package, which he said was detected by an X-ray machine.

A spokesman on the scene said the package was found in the loading dock area by an astute employee.

"One of the guards spotted it, the building was evacuated, and everybody was lead to safety, including the children within the daycare and all federal occupants," said Genaro Cavazos, chief of the Risk Management Branch.

Sperling said there was no evidence that the contents of the package are explosive, but authorities wanted to take every precaution.

WDRB's Stephan Johnson recorded video of streams of people leaving the building, which is located near the corner of 7th Street and W. Chestnut. They were eventually led away to a nearby parking garage because of the rain.

Federal officials and emergency crews closed down 6th Street and 7th Street at Chestnut Street and remained on the scene while the suspicious package was being checked out.
