LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- A Berkeley, Missouri, father was arrested in Hardin County Monday evening after police say he and his child ran from police after an accident.

According to an arrest report, Kentucky State Police responded to an accident near the 82 mile marker of I-65 shortly before 5 p.m.

Police say 34-year-old Charles R. Bennett, Jr. and his juvenile child ran away from the accident scene.

Bennett was eventually found not far from the crash scene, in a vehicle parked inside a garage at a home that was surrounded by a privacy fence, according to the arrest report. Police say the vehicle was not Bennett's, but instead belonged to the home owner.

Bennett allegedly told officers that, at some point during the accident, he tried to turn around, and ended up hitting another vehicle on I-65, so "he panicked and ran."

Bennett's son -- a child -- was also found. Police say the boy was "extremely cold, and had no shoes." The boy allegedly told officers that he had lost his shoes, "while hiding from the police with his dad."

Police say the ambient temperature at the time was approximately 50 degrees, and it was raining.

Bennett was arrested and charged with Leaving the Scene of an Accident -- Failure to Render Aid or Assistance, Endangering the Welfare of a Minor and Criminal Trespassing.

Police say he also had an active warrant out of Missouri.

He is currently being held in the Hardin County Detention Center.
