LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) — Former University of Louisville basketball standout Kyle Kuric has left a Barcelona hospital for the first time since undergoing surgery on Nov. 5 to remove a benign brain tumor, according to news sources in Spain.

The  Madrid-based El Mundo newspaper reported that Kuric has been discharged, and could return to his Gran Canaria team in a matter of weeks, after he recovers from an additional surgery to place a plate into his skull. That surgery will be in December.

Kuric went into the hospital after complaining of a migraine headache and missing a game in early November. Doctors diagnosed him with meningioma, which is a tumor that arises from the meninges — the membranes that surround the brain and spinal cord.

After undergoing successful surgery to remove the tumor, Kuric developed swelling around the brain and had to undergo a second surgery to try to relieve it. He spent several days unconscious and on a ventilator, but emerged from that medically induced coma alert and able to talk to his family.

In recent days, he has been on social media, retweeting messages of good luck from teammates and fans, as well as media reports about his condition.

Louisville basketball coach Rick Pitino spoke about Kuric's recovery about a week ago.

"I was never so scared and worried in my life as what I was hearing," Pitino said. "You know, I think the thing that sometimes makes me feel so lucky about being a Louisville basketball coach is we all celebrate, we all suffer together. This entire town -- it wasn't just us feeling it. This entire town was, no matter where I was, was, 'How's Kyle? How's Kyle? How's Kyle?' For a major city, (that's) pretty darn special. I think a lot of prayers were answered with Kyle."
