LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Louisville Metro Police say they arrested a man and woman on drug charges as a four-year-old child who was with the two suspects watched.

Police say the young boy was in a truck with the two adults just before 1 a.m. on Nov. 19 on Slevin Street, near N. 24th Street in the Portland neighborhood. Officers said they noticed 28-year-old Travis Schmalz seemed to be under the influence of narcotics.

According to the arrest report, investigators asked to him to exit the truck and noticed a bundle of heroin partially under the leg of the four-year-old. The child was sitting between Schmalz and 38-year-old Tonia Basham on the bench seat of the truck.

Police say both Schmalz and Basham admitted the heroin was theirs. Basham also showed police where she had three needles for heroin use stowed in the truck, according to arrest reports. Investigators say they also found a pipe used for methamphetamine.

Both adults were charged with first degree drug possession and endangering the welfare of a minor. It's not clear if either adult was the boy's parent.
