LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- A local brewery is launching a new line of beer that could knock you right off your feet. It's inspired by legendary wrestler Randy 'Macho Man Savage' and it has inspired a local wrestling event.
The event is happening Saturday night inside Slugger field.
"This is the biggest launch of a beer we've ever done. I can barely believe it," Against the Grain Brewery co-owner Jerry Gnagy said.
One of Louisville's fastest growing breweries is delivering a new taste and the owner of Against the Grain can't keep quiet any longer.
"We kind of took a cue from other Pilsners in the market. We had Pevo Pilsner, Prima Pilsner and I just liked that P alliteration. So then I thought, Poffo. It came from Leaping Lanny Poffo, a wrestler I used to watch back in the day," Gnagy said.
But the owner had no idea that Leaping Lannie Poffo came from a family of wrestlers.
"I didn't even know that Randy Macho Man Savage, his real name was Randy Mario Paffo. They're brothers," Gnagy explained. "It's a name in Kentucky that's synonymous with wrestling and they have roots right here in Kentucky. So I was like, this is perfect."
Just like that, Poffo Pils was born, featuring the legendary Macho Man Savage.
Gnagy met with Ohio Valley Wrestling officials and together they came up with the perfect match-up for the beer's debut. Brews and Bruises -- a wrestling event like no other -- centered around Poffo Pils.
OVW Champion Chris Silvio will headline the card that features 50 superstars.
"As a kid, Macho Man Savage was a hero a man," Silvio said. "A man that was so much larger than life. He actually inspired me a lot."
Savage passed away in 2011, but on Saturday night at slugger field his legacy come back to life. And WDRB's Stephan Johnson will be making a special appearance.
