LOUISVILLE, Ky (WDRB) -- A west Louisville ministry that provides service to those in need has reopened after being closed for nearly two months.

"The people were really hurting about us being closed. We're coming into Christmas time and people's utilities are off. People's rent hasn't been paid. People are out of work,” said Rev. Geoffrey Ellis.

Many west Louisville residents struggled more than usual during the months of September and October because the organization that's usually there to help had to shut down.

"The months we've been out have been excruciating because we couldn't serve people like we wanted to,” said Ellis.

Rev. Ellis is with West Louisville Community Ministries.

The agency has provided emergency financial assistance to west Louisville residents for 35 years.

"We're back stronger. We're back more organized. We're ready to go,” he told WDRB.

The non-profit shut down in September because of financial problems.

"This is an organization that needs operating funds and we need people and churches especially to come alongside. We're looking for stakeholders, board members,” he said.

During the closure, some of West Louisville's clients were able to get help from the Association of Community Ministries.

"They were able to come along and help some of our clients when we couldn't and we are eternally grateful to them for that,” said Ellis.

Metro Councilwoman Jessica Green says the re-opening couldn't have come at a better time.

"How befitting that we're going into the holiday season, the season of Thanksgiving and thinking about all the constituents and neighbors and residents who can be served and who need to be served during this time,” she said.

If you'd like to help donate, the WLCM’s new phone number is 502-409-7371.

It’s located at 3146 W. Broadway and is open Monday through Thursday from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
