FRANKFORT, Ky. (WDRB) -- One person was killed and two other people were injured in an apartment fire early Friday in Frankfort.

According to Maj. Rob Warfel with Frankfort City Police, it started just before 2 o'clock this morning at the Country Hills Apartments on Schenkel Lane.

He says when crews arrived, the apartment was fully engulfed with flames and smoke on the second floor.

One person died at the scene. Two other people were taken by LifeFlight to the UK Medical Center for what Warfel called "very severe injuries."

Neighbors who live nearby were distraught by the news.

"Oh my God," said Andrea Moore. "Losing someone, period, is horrible. But to lose someone like that."

The fire destroyed at least one unit, and damaged others, with melted siding and a collapsed roof

Warfel would not confirm if there is a criminal investigation into the cause and origin of the fire and that the fire department requested their assistance.

According to Warfel, it's going to be hard to pinpoint where the fire started.

"All of the evidence -- it's not criminal evidence -- but evidence that would lead you to determine where it happened is burned up or damaged by water. So that's why it is a difficult thing to determine."

The fire not only affected the victims and neighbors, but first responders as well.

"It takes a toll, it really does," Warfel said.

The Red Cross is helping families who have been forced out of their homes.

Because of the fatality and severe injuries, Kentucky State Police and the state fire marshal are assisting in the investigation.
