'Girls on the Run Louisville' teaches girls healthy habits through 5K training

Posted: Updated:

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- The mission of "Girls on the Run Louisville" is teaching girls about the importance of building health and wellness at an early age.

While training for the 5K, girls in the 3rd through 8th grades learn healthy habits, self-confidence and self-esteem.

The culmination of that training took place Saturday at Waterfront Park. Each girl had an adult running buddy who encouraged them along the way.

"They work with the girls twice a week for 90 minutes each day, and over the course of 10 weeks, they go from not running at all to 3.1 miles."

Girls on the Run is a national group, the local council formed about five years ago and started with three schools.

Now it serves more than 300 girls at 22 locations.
