Louisville Metro works to inform public on impending cold weather

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- The city of Louisville is preparing for winter weather.

“Seasons are always changing,” said Warning Coordination meteorologist Joe Sullivan. “You always have the extremes up and down, and you get all sorts of weather here in Louisville from snow storms, to ice storms to actual floods.”

Louisville city officials, in coordination with the National Weather Service, are doing their best to prepare for the upcoming winter and prepare the public as well.

“When severe weather is about to happen,” Sullivan said. “They're in consultation with us, so they know what to expect, and they can help prepare their citizens.”

One of the biggest concerns each year for city leaders is salt. The city has 40,000 tons of salt on hand for this year's winter, which is 67 percent more than Louisville used last year when the city was fighting snow well into March.

“We work with the city to encourage people to become more weather ready, not storm ready but weather ready,” Sullivan said.

However, there was good news from the National Weather Service officials, who say this winter may turn out to be much more mild.

“There are never any surprises. We know what's happening on their end and they know what’s happening on our end,” Sullivan said.

City and emergency management leaders met Saturday to go over their plan and hand out pamphlets on how it can prepare as well.

“When we talk about preparedness particularly during the winter,” said Louisville Metro Emergency Services spokesperson Jody Duncan. “We want to remind people that they need to have a kit.”
