Bourbon lovers come out for Pappy Van Winkle lottery at local liquor store

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- It's some of the rarest bourbon on the planet, and after hundreds waited in the cold for hours Sunday, it's now in the hands of some very lucky owners.

An award-winning blend of corn, wheat and barley, Pappy Van Winkle has very low production and super high demand.

Jerry Rogers with Party Mart has put on "Pappy Fest" for the last five years. The liquor store holds a lottery, giving everyone the same chance to buy a bottle.

Barry Westerman was one of the first in line.

"Being able to have a bottle of bourbon that you can't just walk into a store and buy ... I think that's the biggest draw of it," he said.

That's exactly what drew hundreds to the business Sunday. The line wrapped around the entire Brownsboro Shopping Center.

"It's a fair shot for everybody," one man in line said. "You can stand out here for two days or two hours and get a better chance. I mean the lottery is the best way to go for sure."

The cheapest bottle, aged for 10 years, was priced at $45.

The oldest and most expensive, the 23-year-old bottle, sold for $240.

After a winner's number was called, they picked up Pappy Bucks that corresponded with the bottle they wanted to buy.

Some said they'd drink their bottle around the holidays. Others had more lucrative plans.

"I've got a friend that I'm probably gonna sell it to who's a diehard Van Winkle fan," one winner said.

It was a lucky night for many bourbon lovers, who now own one of the rarest bottles in the world.

Last year 948 people waited in line, but staff members say they won't know the totals for this year until Monday.
