Police: beware of porch pirates when shopping online

Posted: Updated:

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- From Black Friday to Cyber Monday, the holiday shopping season officially starts now.

Police tell us, if your Christmas shopping includes a trip into cyberspace, you should protect yourself from becoming a victim of theft.

That's because online shopping usually involves having a package delivered to your home.

Krysi Simon has already started her holiday shopping. And with three small children, she loves the convenience of shopping from home.

"I can just hop online and just order the things that I need to order and they show up at my door and there is no running thru stores, you know, with three kinds tagging along behind me," Simon said.

But as cyber Monday approaches, Metro Police say there's a good chance thieves could steal your Christmas gifts and joy.

"Every single year during or around this time, there is a constant flow of packages being dropped off on the front porches of all these homes and it's a crime of opportunity," said Det. Aaron Tinelli, with LMPD's Fourth Division.

Det. Tinelli said the porch pirating has already started.

"The season is up and we've already started to get cases where packages are being taken off the front porches of homes," he said.

Det. Tinelli said there are ways you can protect yourself, in December of last year a homeowner used surveillance cameras to catch a suspect in the act.

"The guy was following the truck, he was following the postal service and other delivery systems," said Tinelli.

Tinelli also said you can request a signature.

"So when that person, whether it's UPS or U.S. Postal Service, they drop it off, they get a signature. If that's not possible...send it to a location where the individual you know is going to be home."

"If I was going to be gone for any extended period of time, those would definitely be options that I would considered," said Simon.

Police say if you follow those simple tips, your merchandise should be home with you for the holidays.
