LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) – Clients of The Healing Place in Louisville got an early Christmas present just a day before Thanksgiving.

Inside a small room on West Market Street, their lives were changed Wednesday night thanks to a simple pair of shoes.

Dr. George Quill was part of the generosity. He partnered with Soles4Souls back in 2007. Through generous charities and donations, he and his team provide free shoes and socks, screenings, and foot exams.

They're helping the men and women who are recovering from alcohol and drug addiction, or just need a place to stay.

Walk just a day in their shoes and you might think twice about complaining.

"I go there every night, Monday through Sunday nights to sleep," said Wilda Bell.

Bell is diabetic and needs special shoes to stop sores from forming on her feet.

"We walk a lot and we're on our feet a lot and without either one, shoes or socks, we'd be up a creek without a paddle," said Bell.

She hasn’t had a new pair in months, but Wednesday night that all changed and brought tears to her eyes.

"It shows you somebody really cares about the homeless people and they'll do so much for us -- especially through the Healing Place."

Ronald Porter, another client, can't say thank you enough.

"They looked out for me tonight," he said.

Porter said it was his first fitting for shoes since he was about 12. The pair he walked in with, wasn't holding up.

"They're falling apart right there (he said showing off his old shoes), and I couldn't walk around in snow with these."

That’s one of the main reasons Dr. Quill got involved.

"I try to help people every day in my practice, but this is one of the rewarding most dramatic changes you can make in someone's life," said Dr. Quill.

He says it’s all about helping people get back on their feet, one step at a time.
